Against Essex at Ilford he batted for four and a half hours in the second innings to force a draw. He was asked to stand by for the First Test match against Australia but was not called up. In September he scored a century against the touring Australians for T.N.Pearce’s XI at Scarborough. He completed his century in two hours before lunch on the first day out of 202 for four.
