Famous Cricketers No 86 - John Edrich

1960 In the match against Worcestershire at Worcester in June, Edrich retired from the match following an X-Ray on his finger which revealed that it had been broken in the previous match against Nottinghamshire. Although he missed nearly four weeks cricket he still scored five centuries and five fifties in Championship matches as Surrey slipped to seventh place. Comments in Wisden stated “Edrich, whilst proving a reliable run-getter, needed too much time to complete a century on pitches far more favourable to batsmen than for some years at The Oval”. Edrich and Stewart formed the backbone of the batting for Surrey. His highest score to date was 154 against Warwickshire at The Oval and this innings lasted 5 hours 10 minutes and contained 25 fours. He finished in 15th place in the first-class averages. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 32.
