Famous Cricketers No 86 - John Edrich

1959 Because of injuries to Clark and Fletcher, Edrich, now 21 years old, was drafted into the Surrey side for the game at Trent Bridge. He was asked to open the innings and scored centuries in both innings. Not suprisingly, he held his place as opening batsman and by early June had scored four centuries in seven innings. He maintained his form, but broke a finger in the match against Yorkshire in late July missing three weeks cricket but scored 1,799 runs in the season at an average of 52.91. Surrey finished second in the season’s Championship. He played for the Players v Gentlemen at Lord’s. He also broke his finger in the last match against Northamptonshire at The Oval.
