From being County Champions two years earlier they finished sixteenth in 1980, winning only two matches. It was a frustrating season for Underwood. He was selected for only one of the Tests against the West Indies, and by the end of July had taken only 17 first-class wickets. From then until the end of the season things improved, and he took 44 wickets in the last seven matches in which he bowled. 62
