He played in two Tests against the West Indies with limited success but against New Zealand he took no fewer than 24 wickets at an average of 9.16. This included 11-70 in the First Test and 12-101 in the Third, to this day the best match analysis for England against New Zealand in England. For the sixth time he took 100 wickets in a season. In Kent’s match against Lancashire at Old Trafford he batted for over four hours for his side’s highest score of 80 after being sent in as nightwatchman after the fall of an early Kent wicket on the first evening.
