Famous Cricketers No 85 - Derek Underwood
1966/67 - MCC Under 25 in Pakistan On this, his first overseas tour, Underwood found the pitches on the Indian sub-continent unrewarding and he took just thirteen wickets in six matches of a hectic tour schedule. His efforts contributed much to Kent winning the Gillette Cup and finishing second in the County Championship, their best position for 39 years. Overlooked for the three Tests against India and the first against Pakistan, he took his first five-wicket Test haul at Trent Bridge. His best returns of the season were 6-28 against Glamorgan, 7-33 against Leicestershire, 14-82 in the match at Hastings against Sussex and 7-35 and 5-15 against Hampshire to give him 12-50 in the match. His innings and match analyses of 7-78 and 10-152 for Kent against the Pakistanis remain the best for the county against the tourists. Against Surrey at the Oval he made 47, his highest score to date, with strokes, according to Wisden, “ that put the leading batsmen to shame”. 19
