In his first match of the season he achieved his best innings analysis to this point, 7 for 97 against Yorkshire, and improved on this performance against Sussex at Hastings on a dry, dusty pitch with 9 for 28, which was to prove the best of his career. As in the previous season against the West Indians he took five wickets in an innings against the Australians, the 1964 tourists. Kent finished in seventh place in the County Championship, their most successful season since 1947. In the latter part of the season Alan Knott joined the Kent side and started his great partnership with Underwood for Kent and England. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 28.
