Jessop was top of the County’s batting averages and 16th in the national list. He was second equal in the list of century makers. Gilbert Jessop was appointed a Selector for the Test Trials, along with Lord Hawke and P.F.Warner. There were originally three matches planned:- G.L.Jessop’s XI v P.F.Warner’s XI at Bramall Lane; England v The Rest at Lord’s and a similar match at Old Trafford. The first two matches did not justify the disruption they caused to the Championship and so the last match was cancelled. In the match at Northampton, the Gloucestershire team wore black armbands as they mourned the death of Dr.E.M.Grace. Jessop lost the toss for Gloucestershire in seven consecutive matches. When Northamptonshire played at Cheltenham, they had to come by car due to the national railway strike. In August, Gloucestershire took part in the initial first-class match on the Dudley ground. The match with Hampshire at Southampton was a festival of run making. Jessop scored a century in each innings; C.B.Fry made 258*, the highest score of his career, and A.E.Dipper made 119. 1314 runs were scored for 21 wickets in the match. Jessop scored 276 runs altogether in 211 minutes with 2 sixes and 46 fours. For MCC v Yorkshire at Scarborough, Jessop’s score in the second innings, at stumps, was 117 in 80 minutes with 3 sixes and 17 fours with only 5 runs needed for victory. In his final innings of the season, Jessop put on 225 for the 4th wicket with R.H.Spooner in 2 hours. Jessop hit one six and 23 fours. 46
