Jessop was top of the County’s batting averages and second in their bowling list. He was ninth in the national batting averages and seventh in the bowling. He was seventh equal in the list of century makers. Jessop took 34 catches, the most he ever took in a season. At Bath against Somerset he scored a century in each innings. At times the Somerset field contained ‘two extra covers’ but still the runs came. In the match he scored 276 runs in 180 minutes with 50 boundaries, one chance and one dismissal. Against Sussex at Gloucester in the first innings, Jessop made 164 out of 203 in 2 hours with 30 fours. He reached 50 out of 56 in 48 minutes; 102 out of 135 in 95 minutes and 150 out of 187 in 115 minutes. At Bristol against Surrey, he took five wickets in each innings of a match for the only time in his career. This year was seen as being the 150th anniversary of cricket at Hambledon. To this end, the Hambledon Festival was initiated in September with a first-class (12-a-side) match on Broad Halfpenny Down. It was anticipated that this would be an annual fixture.
