Famous Cricketers No 84 - G.L.Jessop

at Bristol, Jessop declared twice but the match was left drawn. In July, Gloucestershire played Kent in the initial first-class match to take place on the Crabble Cricket Ground in Dover. In his second innings against Yorkshire at Harrogate, Jessop scored 89 out of 111 in 45 minutes with one six and 15 fours. The third part of Chapter Seven of A.A.Thomson’s novel The Exquisite Burden is based on this match. Some of the figures are correct and the text epitomises how the general public felt about Jessop and his wonderful batting. In the second innings of the match against Hampshire at Cheltenham, Jessop equalled his own record by reaching 50 in 15 minutes. Jessop enjoyed batting against Sussex. Having made his career best score (286) against them, he made his second highest score (240) against them in July and in August scored a hundred before lunch at Hastings. His score of 240 was made out of 337 in 200 minutes during which he gave no chance. It contained one six and 35 fours. He reached 50 in 45 minutes, 100 in 95, 150 in 145 and 200 in 175. This was his 5th and last double century. At Hastings, he came in at 28 for 3 on the first morning and made 119 out of 156 in 75 minutes with 19 4’s. With J.H.Board, he put on 138 for the 4th wicket in 65 minutes. He was 5th out at 184, and the score at lunch was 203 for 7. Sussex won by 4 wickets. In September, again at Hastings, Jessop scored 191 in 90 minutes with 5 sixes out of the ground and 30 fours. This was two runs more than E.B. Alletson’s famous innings, in the same length of time. Jessop hit 26 runs off one over from A.E.Relf. He reached 150 in 63 minutes and was finally caught by H.R.Butt, at mid off. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 328.
