Jessop was fifth in the County’s batting averages and seventh in their bowling list. For the first time since his maiden century in 1897, he failed to score a hundred in an English season. In the second innings for the Gentlemen at Lord’s, ‘Jessop was dropping on his right knee and lashing Fielder’s fast, straight good-length ball to the square-leg boundary. His pluck was no less admirable than his skill. Had he missed the ball with his bat he would probably have stopped it with his head.’ He made 73 out of 92 in 65 minutes and put on 49 for the last wicket, of which W.Brearley made 7. At the end of the season, Yorkshire had to beat Gloucestershire to retain the Championship. Gloucestershire had a first innings lead of 5 runs and set Yorkshire 234 to win. Jessop took 3 of the last 5 wickets to snatch a famous victory by one run. Kent won the Championship. Gilbert Laird Osborne Jessop was born on the 6th September at 10 Kensington Square Mansions. His father’s profession is given as ‘Journalist’. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 304. MCC v Yorkshire, Lord’s, May 7, 8, 9 (MCC won by 40 runs) b W.Rhodes 63 218 132 lbw b W.Rhodes 55 242 288 36
