an England win. Australia were 46 for 2, having been asked to follow on 340 behind on the first innings. He was picked for the Second Test at Lord’s but did not appear on the field as rain restricted play to 105 minutes. In the Third Test, at Bramall Lane, Australia won by 143 runs after a first innings lead of 49. England were set 338 to win in the fourth innings. Jessop and R.Abel opened the innings. When Abel was out at 14, Jessop was joined by J.T.Tyldesley. By close of play on the second day, they had put on 59. England were 73 for 1, of which Jessop had made 53 in 45 minutes. On the third day, Jessop added two more runs before he was lbw to Trumble. Jessop was dropped for the Fourth Test at Old Trafford which Australia won by 3 runs, thus retaining the Ashes. He was recalled for the last Test at The Oval. The visitors made 324 runs on the first day. By the end of the second day, England were dismissed for 183 and Australia were 114 for 8. On the final day, Australia were all out for 7 more runs, setting England 263 to win. When Jessop came in to join F.S.Jackson, England had slumped to 48 for 5. This pair put on 109 runs in 67 minutes. When Jackson was out, Jessop and G.H.Hirst added another 30 runs. Jessop was dismissed for 104 out of 139 while he was at the wicket. His innings lasted 75 minutes and including 17 fours, several of which would now count as six. Jessop’s aggressive innings brought a seemingly impossible target within reach. This was his only Test century and his first at The Oval. His only other hundred on this ground was against the Players in 1913. After Jessop was out, sensible innings from Hirst, A.F.A.Lilley and W.Rhodes ensured that England won a famous victory by one wicket. A week later, the Australians had an easy win against Gloucestershire at Cheltenham. Jessop achieved some success with the ball. V.T.Trumper, J.Darling and M.A.Noble were all caught off Jessop by F.H.Bateman-Champain at long on. Gilbert Laird Jessop and Millicent Annie Osborne were married on 8th October at Christ Church, Paddington. His profession is given as ‘Stockbroker’. Charlie Townsend was best man.
