In a brief cameo innings in the Edgbaston Test he hit the first and third balls he received from McDermott for straight sixes and hit the fourth ball for four. During the season he set a new record for sixes in a first-class season. For Somerset he averaged more than 100 with the bat and the first three of his five centuries came off 76, 76 and 50 balls respectively. Despite his exploits, Somerset had a dismal season finishing last in the Championship table. Botham hit ten 6s in an innings of 134 against Northamptonshire at Weston-super-Mare and batted just 47 balls in hitting 76 not out against both Lancashire and Gloucestershire. His innings of 138 not out against Warwickshire at Edgbaston included 12 sixes. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 251.
