He had a moderate series, scoring 270 runs at an average of 27.00 and taking eighteen wickets at the high cost of 40.50. He scored one fifty, at Adelaide, and his best bowling figures were four for 75 in the final Test at Sydney. The highlight of the tour was the English victory at Melbourne by just three runs, the lowest winning runs margin in an “Ashes” Test in Australia. It was Botham who took the final Australian wicket in the second innings, Jeff Thomson being caught by Geoff Miller at slip.
