Botham had an outstanding series with the bat against India, hitting the highest Test score of his career, 208, at Kennington Oval and 128 in the Test at Old Trafford. He made 67 in the Lord’s Test against them and then took five wickets for 46 runs when India batted. He hit four 6s and nineteen 4s in his double century and two 6s and nineteen 4s at Old Trafford. He was not so successful with the bat against Pakistan but he did hit a valuable 57 in a close game at Headingley and 69 in a losing cause at Lord’s. His nine wickets for 144 at Headingley probably decided the match and the series in England’s favour. In the Championship he took thirty-nine wickets at 18.43 in only eleven appearances. His most astonishing innings came at Taunton against Warwickshire. Somerset needed 309 to win and had reached 149 for four needing a further 160 in 145 minutes. They only took 65 minutes as Botham hit 131 not out in that time with ten 6s and twelve 4s. It was the fastest hundred of the season, reached in 52 minutes off 56 balls. Altogether he scored 675 Championship runs at 35.52. He held seven catches during the season. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 187.
