What has not been mentioned is that he also took ten wickets against them in the Test at Kennington Oval, bowling eighty-nine overs in the match to take ten for 253. Altogether in the Test series he took thirty-four wickets at an average of 20.58 and scored 399 runs at 36.27. He had recovered his form as an all-rounder after the disappointment of losing the England captaincy. In the two matches in which he was captain he contributed just 34 runs in four innings and took six wickets for 149 runs.
