It was not a happy tour. Apart from losing the series two-nil, the second Test match, scheduled for Guyana, had to be cancelled because the Guyanese government would not accept the presence as a member of the team of Robin Jackman, who had links with South Africa. On top of this there was the death of assistant manager, Ken Barrington, in Barbados whilst the third Test was in progress. Botham had a poor series scoring only 73 runs in seven innings at an average of 10.42. His highest Test score was no higher than 26. As a bowler he took fifteen wickets at 32.80. Admittedly England were playing the most powerful team in the world away from home but one has to ask whether too much was asked of Botham to be captain and leading all-rounder against such a strong team.
