They faced a much stronger Australian side than they had played in 1978/79. The Packer players were back and Australia won all three Test matches conclusively. Botham had a fine series finishing third in the batting averages with 187 runs at an average of 37.40 and easily first in the bowling taking 19 wickets at 19.52. No other English bowler averaged under 30 runs per wicket. He hit a not out hundred at Melbourne and took eleven wickets for 176 at Perth. After the Australian series, England travelled to Bombay to play a Golden Jubilee Test against India. If ever a man could be said to have almost won a Test match single-handed it was Botham in this match. In England’s innings he scored 114 out of 296 all out and in India’s innings he took six for 58 and seven for 48. On the tour he took thirty-four wickets at only 15.64 each.
