He played twenty innings scoring 731 runs at an average of 38.47 and taking forty-six wickets at 28.65. He played a memorable innings in the Test at Headingley against India hitting five 6’s and sixteen 4’s in scoring 137 runs from just 152 balls faced. In handing him the Man of the Match trophy, the adjudicator, J.C.Laker, described it as “one of the finest Test innings of the last twenty years”. Not out nine overnight, Botham had reached 108 by lunch the next day. One more run would have given him the first century scored for England in a pre-lunch session since 1935. He played another explosive innings at Swansea against Glamorgan, his 120 including seven 6’s and twelve 4’s. He took five wickets twice in Test innings against India but his best figures were for Somerset against Surrey at Taunton when he took six for 81 in what Wisden describes as a “remarkably well-sustained burst” on a good wicket. He held twenty-one catches, ten of them in the Test series. In the Lord’s Test he took his 100th Test wicket, S.M.Gavaskar, in the fastest time ever of 2 years and 9 days.
