Far from going out quietly, he was very nearly the first batsman in the country to reach 1,000 first-class runs, being beaten to the mark by Doug Insole of Essex by only a matter of hours. For three months he was in the form of a twenty-one year old, not a veteran of forty-one. Because of a poor August, when he only managed two fifties as his eyesight started to deteriorate, he was pipped for first place in the Warwickshire averages by Ray Hitchcock. It was Hitchcock who told me that Dollery’s eyesight was on the wane; they were batting together at Hinckley in a double-century partnership against Leicestershire when the skipper came 54
