Famous Cricketers No 82 - H.E. 'Tom' Dollery
Middlesex. Dollery had a splendid individual match against Yorkshire, notching up yet another big century, 159 with 20 fours in the first innings and a match winning 69 in the second when the pitch was starting to wear and he was going for quick runs to set the Tykes a target. His declaration left them 196 to win in 110 minutes, and to their credit they went for them, but Warwickshire took wickets steadily, until the last pair came together with ten minutes left but still 52 runs short. With the entire Warwickshire side crouched around the bat the last two Yorkshiremen held out for an exciting draw. Dollery’s revival in the second half of the season had enabled him to pass 2,000 runs for the second time in his career, and he easily headed his county’s averages, (he finished 13th in the first-class list). After scoring just 572 runs from his first twenty-three innings he notched 1,501 from his last twenty-eight, a remarkable turnaround. His form encouraged him to sign a new agreement, but from now on he would only commit himself to one year at a time. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct St Total Total 317.
