As good a batsman as Cyril Washbrook for instance didn’t play in the Tests against the Australians that summer. Dollery’s form was never good enough to put him in contention for the South African tour in the winter either. His first century of the season, 127 in three and a half hours against Leicestershire turned around first innings arrears of 237 into a declaration position, but Leicestershire got home with only minutes of extra time left; it was their first win at Leicester since August 1935! 19
