He took only 128 Championship wickets at the much higher cost of 21.43. There were still some magical performances as when he took thirteen wickets for 97 runs against Worcestershire at the Victoria Ground, Cheltenham and seven for 26 against Somerset at Bath. Generally, though, he was not quite the destroyer of batting line-ups that he had been. As a batsman he made 227 runs in all matches at an average of 7.32 and he took six catches.
