In all matches for Gloucestershire that season he took five wickets or more in an innings twenty-two times, and ten or more wickets in a match eight times. In four successive innings early in the season, against Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, he took twenty-nine wickets for 204 runs. Another remarkable analysis was the 5 for 11 he took in 12.2 overs against Somerset at Bristol. He reached one hundred wickets by 12th June, equalling the earliest date to achieve this feat, accomplished by J.T.Hearne in 1896. He continued to run through sides for the rest of the season. He bowled more than 1345 overs, showing wonderful stamina for a man of forty-eight. As a batsman he scored 157 runs in all matches, average 5.81, and he took four catches.
