His 179 wickets in all matches at 12.84 placed him second in the national averages behind Hedley Verity who bowled far fewer overs and took only forty-six wickets. The figures are exceptional because he missed nine matches through injury. His form helped lift Gloucestershire to second place in the Championship table, just three points behind Champions, Lancashire. Amongst his many wonderful feats were figures of sixteen for 109 against Middlesex at Cheltenham’s Victoria ground, thirteen for 73 against Somerset at Clifton, fourteen for 97 against Warwickshire at Cheltenham College, fifteen for 91 against Surrey at Cheltenham College and ten for 126 in the famous tied match against the Australians at Bristol. In this match he dismissed Don Bradman in both innings. He took five or more wickets in an innings twenty times and ten or more wickets in a match seven times. He did little with the bat, 119 runs at 5.95, and he took four catches. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 468.
