His 143 Championship wickets cost him 22.60 each as compared to the 183 he took at 18.90 in 1927. He had some very effective matches taking thirteen wickets against both Middlesex at Lord’s and against Surrey at Cheltenham. In all matches he took five or more wickets in an innings sixteen times and on five occasions took ten or more wickets in a match. Compared to previous seasons he was used less, bowling 256 fewer overs than in 1927. As a batsman he hit 51 against Nottinghamshire at Gloucester and scored 438 runs in all games at 14.12.
