He bowled an enormous number of overs, 1572, and there is no doubt that he was severely overbowled at times. He took five wickets in an innings eighteen times and ten wickets in a match on eight occasions. He was called into the Test squad at Headingley but omitted on the morning of the match. He was selected twice for the Players against the Gentlemen and for South of England against the Australians. His batting brought him 691 runs at an average of 13.54 and included an innings of 73 against Derbyshire at the Greenbank ground in Bristol. He took fourteen catches.
