He took 184 wickets in the Championship at the remarkably low average of 13.51. Amongst his many great bowling feats, that against Middlesex at the Greenbank Ground, Bristol stands out. He took fourteen wickets in the match for 131 runs including the hat-trick in both innings. Twenty times he took more than five wickets in an innings and he took ten or more wickets in a match on nine occasions. He took fifteen wickets for 109 against Derbyshire at Derby and 8 for 26 in the first innings against Essex at Bristol. He represented the Players against the Gentlemen at Blackpool.
