He took five wickets in an innings seventeen times and ten wickets in a match on five occasions. Against Somerset at Bristol he bowled sixty-three overs in an innings of 532-9 declared and in the following match, against Worcestershire at Bristol, he bowled more than seventy-one overs to take thirteen wickets for 150 in the match. He was overworked, bowling more than seven hundred more overs than anyone else in the Gloucestershire side.
