In some ways it was not much of an honour. In a season of general panic amongst the England selectors, thirty players were chosen as Australia steamrollered to three successive Test victories and it could be argued that one would have to be bad to be overlooked. Parker certainly was not that. He led the Gloucestershire averages taking 156 Championship wickets at 16.54 and was eighth in the national averages taking 164 wickets at an average of 17.64. In the Test Match he took 2 for 32 in twenty-eight overs, hardly a failure, but he was left out of the side for the next match at Kennington Oval. For Gloucestershire he took all ten wickets in an innings for the only time in his career, against Somerset at Bristol and he took five wickets in an innings nineteen times. In five successive innings at Cheltenham he took twenty-nine wickets. He had an outstanding all-round match against Leicestershire in July scoring 13 and 82, his highest first-class score, and taking 7 for 115 and 5 for 52. He scored 399 runs in the season at 10.50 and held nine catches. 26
