Famous Cricketers No 80 - E.G.Wynyard
1912 Wynyard played no first-class cricket in 1911 and the following season saw his final match, his career ending where it began - at Lord’s. He did better than on his 1878 debut though, with an unbeaten 27 in his only innings, then dismissing Harry Altham for his final wicket. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct St Total Total 154. However, he played in only a couple of minor matches though he did enough in these to top the bowling averages for the tour at the age of 62! His figures were 11 wickets for 42 runs average 3.81 and he also showed he still retained his batting ability with scores of 14 and 20 not out. Notes 1880. Match No.4, Hampshire v Sussex. Wisden shows Wynyard’s second innings score as 10 but this makes the innings total six runs short and 16 is Wynyard’s correct figure, verified by other sources. 1897. Match No.48, Hampshire v Derbyshire. The Hampshire scorebook as well as both Wisden and Cricket show E.M.Ashcroft as c Wynyard b Soar in Derbyshire’s first innings whereas the ACS 1897 book has him merely b Soar. This last is a misprint and it has been ignored here. 1898. Match No.55, MCC v Oxford University. Wisden shows E.G.Bromley-Martin as bowled Bosanquet; Cricket has him c Wynyard b Bosanquet; and the ACS 1898 book of scores has him st Wynyard b Bosanquet, taken from the University scorebook which is accepted here. 1906. Match No.136, MCC v Yorkshire, Wisden has Hunter c Wynyard, the ACS 1906 book of scores has him c Thompson, taken from the Yorkshire scorebook which is accepted here. * against a match indicates that he was captain. † against a match indicates that he was wicket-keeper. 33
