Famous Cricketers No 80 - E.G.Wynyard

1908 Wynyard’s career was winding down as he made his final appearance for Hampshire - dismissed in each innings by Colin Blythe though Hampshire scraped home by one wicket against Kent. At the close of the season he took part in a unique match for Hambledon v An England XII on Broadhalfpenny Down which was played to mark the unveiling of a granite column memorial to the 18th century Hambledon cricketers. Wynyard did justice to their memory with his last first-class half century as well as sharing a fourth wicket stand of 110 with the Rev.W.V.Jephson (114) to help his side to victory. Though he made 50 retired and 41 not out in two one-day matches, he was unsuccessful in the three unofficial ‘Tests’ against Egypt with just 59 runs average 9.83. 1909 Back home, Wynyard’s only first-class match was against Monty Noble’s Australians for Stanley Cochrane’s team on his private ground at Bray, near Dublin, and he batted well for 36 in his only innings.
