He had resigned the captaincy and Hampshire, whose reliance on military cricketers was adversely affected by the war, slumped to bottom place in the Championship under new skipper Edward Sprot. Wynyard was in excellent form when he did play so his absence from so many matches was a great blow to his county. Against Somerset at Bath he made 38 in an all out first innings of 81 and 107 in just over two hours in the second innings total of 209, in other words exactly 50% of his side’s runs, 145 of 290. At the end of the season Wynyard played in Philip Need’s benefit match at Lord’s and made 85, joining another fast scorer, Albert Trott (75), in smashing 148 for the eighth wicket in just 75 minutes. 22
