Wynyard’s final tally of 1,281 runs average 41.32 was quite overshadowed by his Army colleague, Major Robert Poore, who headed the national averages with the then amazing record of 1,551 runs average 91.23 with seven centuries. The pair peaked together in the match against Somerset at Taunton when they added 411 for the sixth wicket, a Championship record which stands to this day. Overnight Hampshire were 63 for four in reply to Somerset’s 315, then Poore and Tom Soar (95) pulled things round. The score was 258 for five when Wynyard joined Poore and in only four hours 20 minutes they took the total to 669. Wynyard was the first to go and his 225 included two fives and 36 fours. He was dropped three times but only after he had scored around 150. Poore followed shortly afterwards for 304 which beat Wynyard’s 268 of 1896 as Hampshire’s highest first-class individual innings. But until the middle of July Wynyard’s record was quite disappointing with an average of only 13.41. Then he struck form with a vengeance in a golden spell which began with 89 and 81 for MCC against Worcestershire. He and former Australian Test captain Billy Murdoch put on 152 for the first wicket in the first innings, Wynyard’s 89 taking two hours five minutes with fifteen fours while his second innings had the same number of fours and came in one hour 35 minutes. He followed this with the 225 and then a sequence of 89, 28, 79, 51, 57, 46, 39, 77, 71, 26 and 108; a total of 1,066 runs in 14 innings, average 76.15. The 89 against Warwickshire was scored in a 176-run fourth wicket stand with Arthur Hill who made 168. In the next match the same two players had an opening stand of 96 in only 80 minutes against the Australians. Wynyard and Poore (157) had a third-wicket stand of 119 against Leicestershire and in the second innings against 20
