He finished second to Ranjitsinhji in the national batting averages, hit the highest score of his first-class career, led Hampshire to eighth place in the Championship and won a Test call-up for England against Australia at Kennington Oval. He signalled his good form in his opening match when he scored 121 (sixteen 4s and five 3s) for C.I.Thornton’s Team against Cambridge University at Fenner’s. Against a strong Australian side he hit 37 and 68 even though Hampshire were thrashed by an innings and starred in a seven-wicket success over Sussex with 112. The following match against the powerful Yorkshire team was sensational. Wynyard made 268 in a total of 515 and the northerners hung on grimly for a draw. His innings took just over six hours, was made up of two 6s, 38 4s, five 3s, 23 2s and 43 singles and took in two century partnerships, 100 for the second wicket with Herbert Ward (53) and 184 for the third with Francis Quinton (57). Wynyard gave only two chances and batted while 402 runs were added, thus hitting two-thirds of the runs made while he was at the crease. It was Hampshire’s highest individual first-class score, beating the 211 by Francis Lacey against Kent in 1884 though not Lacey’s 323* 16
