He did not play in a first-class match and was unable to join Hampshire until August but then he made up for lost time with a vengeance. He finished with 465 runs average 66.43 as Hampshire won four of their five August games and were convincingly on top in a rain-ruined draw in the other. Earlier in 1894, Derbyshire, Essex, Leicestershire and Warwickshire had been promoted to first-class status but Hampshire had been ignored. Wynyard altered all that as his batting contributed hugely to the change of heart by the authorities in October when Hampshire were added to the promoted list, though not retrospectively. He began with an innings of 90 against Derbyshire and in his three final matches registered three successive centuries, all at Southampton; 117 in two hours v Sussex; 116 in one hour 45 minutes v Leicestershire; and 108 in two hours 30 minutes v Essex. During the luncheon interval on the last day of the Essex match he was presented with a pair of silver candlesticks to commemorate these batting achievements. 1895 After his heroics in 1894, Wynyard’s maiden full first-class season was disappointing. Though he was reasonably consistent and reached double figures in 19 of his 26 innings, his highest score was only 69 and his average 22.34. Perhaps the expectations were too much for him, especially as he was now Hampshire president. He did feature successfully in I Zingari’s jubilee match against the Gentlemen of England at Lord’s when he topped 50 in each innings. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct St Total Total 16.
