Famous Cricketers No 80 - E.G.Wynyard
1878 Wynyard made his first-class debut at the age of 17 years and 66 days when he turned out for Hampshire v MCC at Lord’s. It was not an auspicious occasion as Hampshire were bowled out for 24 and 65 to lose by an innings and 66 runs. Judged strictly in the context of 24 all out, Wynyard’s score of just one run batting at No.8 can hardly be called failure but he followed up with a duck in his second innings and was not called on by the county again this season. It is worth noting that Wynyard was dismissed by Arnold Rylott in each innings, thus initiating a remarkable feature of his career. In the 106 matches in which he was dismissed twice, he fell to the same bowler in each innings in 35 of them, that is in one third of the games! Own Team O M R W Opp Ct St Total Total 1. Earlier, in June, he also played for 22 of Southampton and District against the United South of England Eleven, making the highest score in the match of 30 (c and b A.Watson). Though he was out for a duck, c A.Watson b James Lillywhite, jun., second time round, his first innings runs played a major part in the 12-wicket victory of the Southampton 22. 1880 Wynyard’s return to first-class cricket duplicated his debut match as he scored one and nought for Hampshire v MCC at Lord’s though this time his county won easily by nine wickets. He produced better form in the return when he registered his highest first-class score to date of 24. Against Sussex at Southampton he again fell victim to the same bowler in each innings, this time the Rev. Frederick Greenfield. He was in good form for his county in games not first-class against Somerset and Devon to finish with a total Hampshire record of 247 runs in ten innings, average 24.70.
