Receiving a knighthood before the Lord’s Test, Hadlee responded at the headquarters of cricket with a fine innings on the fourth day of the Second Test. Coming in to bat at 285 for 5, after the fall of four quick wickets, Hadlee (86) joined Mark Greatbatch (47) and these two stopped the rot by putting on 123 for the sixth wicket. Going on to the attack, Hadlee hit two sixes and twelve fours and faced just 84 balls in an innings lasting 107 minutes. England were in command in the Third Test at Edgbaston and in their second innings were 129 for 3. However, John Bracewell and Hadlee soon swept away the rest. In a spell of eight overs Hadlee took 5 for 17, dismissing Robin Smith for 14 and Chris Lewis for one while Jack Russell, Eddie Hemmings and Devon Malcolm all fell to the wily New Zealander without scoring. The dismissal of Malcolm gave Hadlee a wicket with his last ball in both Test and first-class cricket. Outside the Test series, Hadlee played in just two first-class games. In the opening first-class fixture against Worcestershire he displayed fine all-round form, firstly taking 5 for 27 as the county were dismissed for just 171 on the first day, and then saving his side with a splendid innings of 90 when the situation was critical. At one stage the New Zealanders were 113 for 8, but Hadlee stayed for 153 minutes, faced 136 balls and hit one six and twelve fours to give his side a small lead. However, the highlights of the tour for Hadlee were his performances in the Tests, firstly with the bat at Lord’s and then with the ball at Edgbaston as he ended his great career in fine style by wrapping up England’s second innings with another devastating spell.
