It was at 3.01pm on the third day when he reached this great milestone by dismissing Sanjay Manjrekar (4) and to celebrate the occasion a local fan presented Hadlee with 400 roses. New Zealand won this game convincingly and Hadlee took seven wickets in the match. New Zealand were in dire straits at 85 for 6 when they were sent in to bat in the Third Test at Auckland. However, Hadlee (87) came to the rescue with a sparkling innings and, facing just 108 balls, hit fourteen fours in a stay of 134 minutes. When he was joined by Ian Smith, these two put on 103 for the eighth wicket in only 97 minutes. This partnership was an eighth-wicket record for New Zealand in Tests against India, surpassing the previous best for this wicket of 81 by Vic Pollard (43) and Graham Vivian (43) at Calcutta in 1964/65. In the one-off Test against Australia at the Basin Reserve, the visitors had no answer to Hadlee (5-39) and Danny Morrison (3-22) on the first day. “With the ball generally keeping low as well as seaming dangerously …”( Wisden ), Australia soon found themselves in deep trouble at 12 for 4 with three wickets falling to Morrison. Hadlee then came into his own. Having already claimed the wicket of David Boon for a duck, he now sent back Steve Waugh (25) and the tail to take five wickets in an innings for the 100th time in first-class cricket. New Zealand then went on to win this game in fine style. This was Hadlee’s last season in New Zealand cricket and it provided him with some happy memories: Test wins against both India and Australia; a fine innings at Auckland; and 19 wickets in the four Tests, including, of course, that much cherished 400th Test wicket.
