At 10.18 Arun Lal (6) was comfortably caught at third slip by Chris Kuggeleijn from an edge off an angled bat and the record now belonged to Hadlee. Actually it took him 16 balls – there were three no-balls – to take Test wicket number 374 on that first morning. Although India recovered well, Hadlee finished with fine figures of 5 for 65 and it was during this innings that he surpassed Clarrie Grimmett’s record tally of 1424 first-class wickets for a New Zealand-born player. On the rest day most of the team were struck down by a severe mystery virus and when the game resumed on the fourth day, Hadlee, one of the worst affected, was unable to resume his innings. However, he was summoned from his hotel when the follow-on threatened, and “looking ashen, tottered to the crease …” ( Radio New Zealand Cricket Annual ) and then managed an edge to the boundary to ensure that India batted next. When they did, New Zealand called on five substitute fielders, including commentators Jeremy Coney (radio) and Ken Nicholson (television), but not surprisingly the Kiwis eventually suffered a heavy defeat. The tour started in great style for Hadlee when he returned figures of 9 for 55 against West Zone at Rajkot. This was the second time in his first-class career that he had taken nine wickets in an innings and on this occasion it was John Bracewell who took the remaining wicket. During his brief innings, Hadlee (27*) entertained the small crowd by hitting A.N.Pandya for three sixes in one over. New Zealand won a great victory in the Second Test at Bombay due largely to splendid bowling by Hadlee, who returned match figures of 10 for 88, and a fine all-round display by John Bracewell. He made scores of 52 and 32 and took 6 for 51 in the second innings, giving him eight wickets in the game. In addition, fighting innings by Andrew Jones (78) and Ian Smith (54) ensured that India had a difficult task in the fourth innings of the match. Hadlee ended the series with three more wickets in the Third Test at Hyderabad before returning home early due to an injury to his achilles tendon. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 327.
