In the First and now of course only Test, New Zealand were in trouble at 160 for 5 when Hadlee joined his captain, Jeff Crowe, with the Kiwis still some way behind Sri Lanka’s score. However, these two brought about a complete recovery with a record-breaking sixth-wicket partnership of 246* for New Zealand in all Tests, surpassing the previous best of 220 by Glenn Turner (223*) and Ken Wadsworth (78) against the West Indies at Kingston in 1971/72. Furthermore, the Hadlee-Crowe stand is still the highest for this wicket for any New Zealand side in first-class cricket, exceeding the partnership of 226 by Evan Gray (126) and Ross Ormiston (93) for Wellington against Central Districts at the Basin Reserve in 1981/82. Hadlee (151*), batting for 406 minutes and facing 240 balls, made his highest Test Score and hit two sixes and fourteen fours while Crowe (120*) was content to take a more passive role. After an unpromising start to the summer – it was not until the end of June that Nottinghamshire won their first Championship game – the Trent Bridge side had the great satisfaction of winning both the County Championship and the NatWest Bank Trophy, as well as coming second in the Refuge Assurance League. Hadlee also had the honour of appearing for the M.C.C. against the Rest of the World in the showpiece match of the season at Lord’s in August. In his first Championship game of the summer Hadlee (44) did much to prevent a Hampshire victory at Bournemouth when he helped John Birch (82) put on 99 for the sixth wicket on the last day. Rain at Middlesbrough and again at Taunton spoilt the Trent Bridge side’s chances but Hadlee was in splendid all-round form against the West Country team. With a spell of “four for 3 in 29 balls” ( Wisden ), Hadlee saw to it that Somerset (174) made only a modest score and then he punished their bowlers in an innings of power and aggression.
