It was here, at the Basin Reserve, that Hadlee claimed his 300th Test wicket with the prize scalp of Allan Border (13). He also played his part with the bat as New Zealand (379-6) recovered well after being 138 for 5. First Ken Rutherford (65) and then Hadlee (72*) gave Jeremy Coney (101*) the support he needed. In an innings lasting 143 minutes, Hadlee faced 120 balls and hit one six and eleven fours, and with Coney put on 132* for the seventh wicket. This stand is still a record for this wicket for New Zealand in Tests against Australia, eclipsing the Hadlee-Brown partnership of 78 in the First Test at Brisbane earlier in the season. In the Second Test at Christchurch Hadlee was once more among the wickets, taking 7 for 116 in Australia’s first innings, but this time he was unable to remove Border (140 and 114*). New Zealand won at Auckland by eight wickets to take the series 1-0, largely due to the efforts of John Bracewell who obtained “a vast amount of turn” ( Wisden ) to take 6 for 32 in Australia’s second innings and finish with 10 for 106 in the match. Hadlee had to settle for four wickets in this game but he also made a valuable 33, staying for 65 minutes, and putting on 63 for the sixth wicket with Coney (93) at a time when runs were badly needed. Hadlee had a tremendous summer, taking 49 wickets in the six Tests as well as having the great satisfaction of playing in a New Zealand side which recorded back-to-back series wins against Australia both away and at home in one season – an achievement that would have been quite unthinkable not so long ago.
