Famous Cricketers No 79 - Richard Hadlee
put on 115 for the sixth wicket. However, dropped catches, especially off Hadlee’s bowling, during this innings and later in the match, proved costly indeed for New Zealand as they let their opportunities slip. In the Third Test at Perth, Hadlee added to his haul of wickets with returns of 5 for 65 and 6 for 90, giving him 11 for 155 in the match. Thus in the series he took five wickets in an innings five times and ten wickets in a match twice -–a feat without parallel in the history of New Zealand Test cricket. His final tally of 33 wickets was, of course, also a record for New Zealand in any Test series, surpassing the feat of Bruce Taylor who captured 27 wickets in the West Indies during the 1971/72 series. In the game at Perth, Hadlee dismissed Greg Matthews in each innings and thus he claimed the Australian’s wicket no less than six times during the series – in fact every time he batted. On the last day, when conditions for batting were atrocious – “there was frightening lift sometimes, dreadful shooters at others”( New Zealand Cricket Annual ) – New Zealand did well to make the 164 needed for victory for the loss of only four wickets to take the series.
