However, despite a slow start to the season, he still took most wickets and headed the bowling averages in Championship games, as well as making some valuable runs. In the circumstances it was not surprising that Nottinghamshire had to settle for eighth position in the Championship Table. Missing the start of the season, it was not until the home fixture with Kent in June that Hadlee recorded his first fifty of the summer, making 52* and putting on 109* for the sixth wicket with John Birch (60*); he also took 3 for 36 in Kent’s first innings. In the away game with Derbyshire in the visitors’ second innings he made a defiant 54, and then returned figures of 4 for 44 as the home side had to settle for a draw. At Swansea Hadlee made 53* against Glamorgan and his seventh-wicket stand of 114* with Eddie Hemmings (56*) gave the Trent Bridge side a good first innings total. Hadlee was among the wickets at Lord’s when he returned splendid second innings figures of 7 for 34 against Middlesex. Nottinghamshire went on to win this game by five wickets after an exciting innings by Derek Randall (115). Figures of 4 for 39 by Hadlee saw Sussex (168) dismissed cheaply at Trent Bridge but poor weather on the last day spoilt what could have been an interesting finish. Near the end of the season Hadlee returned first innings figures of 8 for 41 against Lancashire – a career best, Bruce French helping him by taking five catches. Then at Scarborough Hadlee hit a carefree 73* in the game with Yorkshire, sharing a stand of 111 for the fifth wicket with Tim Robinson (118). In his last Championship game of the summer Hadlee (71*) helped himself to some easy runs as Hampshire sought to encourage a declaration but by the end of the match they found themselves forced to play out time with their last pair at the wicket.
