However, Hadlee failed to take five wickets in an innings during the series, his best figures being 4 for 53 in the Fourth Test at Kingston. In the First Test at Port-of-Spain Hadlee (39*) played his only innings of significance in this rubber. Batting for 186 minutes and facing 150 balls, he did well to play out time and was well supported for all but the last hour by Jeremy Coney (44). In a difficult tour for New Zealand, Hadlee was the one man for the tourists who really impressed. Tony Cozier, reviewing the tour for Wisden , said: “Richard Hadlee confirmed his standing as a fast bowler of genuine class, but, unlike Marshall, he lacked support of similar quality.” Furthermore, during the First Test Hadlee joined a select band of cricketers who had scored 2,000 runs and taken 200 wickets in Test cricket.
