Wanting 190 to win, Wellington never recovered from a disastrous start, being reduced to 5 for five – two wickets to Hadlee and three to S.R.McNally. After this game Hadlee then warmed up for the visit of the Pakistanis with figures of 5 for 74 against Auckland and 3 for 53 against Northern Districts. New Zealand performed well in the Test matches against Pakistan, winning the series 2-0, and Hadlee, as usual, played an important part in his side’s success. In the First Test at Wellington, New Zealand (492) prospered after the loss of early wickets – at one stage they were 138 for 4. Not surprisingly, Hadlee (89) played a large part in this revival, sharing a record sixth-wicket stand of 145 in 190 minutes with J.F.Reid (148). This partnership easily surpassed the previous best for this wicket for New Zealand in Tests against Pakistan. Joining Reid at 230 for 5, Hadlee faced 144 balls and hit nine fours. At Auckland New Zealand proved far too good for Pakistan. Hadlee, with six wickets in the game, and the two other seamers – Chatfield and Cairns – claimed 18 wickets in the match as the tourists were dismissed cheaply in both innings. Pakistan appeared to be in the box seat at Dunedin when they were 241 for 2 on the first day. However, Hadlee, 52
