Famous Cricketers No 79 - Richard Hadlee

1982/83 Before leaving with the New Zealand team to play in the Benson and Hedges World Series Cup in Australia, Hadlee captained Canterbury in two games in the Shell Trophy and two in the Shell Cup. In the first Trophy game against Central Districts, he returned match figures of 10 for 83 but in a low-scoring encounter Canterbury lost by 23 runs. There was more disappointment for the Lancaster Park side as they went down to Auckland by ten wickets in just two days. Hadlee, batting at No. 8, made 46 in the first innings, which was the highest score for his side in the match! Back in New Zealand, after the Benson and Hedges World Series Cup, injury (sustained in Australia) still kept Hadlee out of action and he did not play in the three one-day internationals against England. However, he did return to the side for the games against the touring Sri Lankans and in the two Test matches Hadlee and the other New Zealand seam bowlers proved too much for the visitors, taking 37 wickets between them, Hadlee’s share being ten.
