Although Hadlee appeared in 17 Championship games, he did not bowl in four of them and in the away game against Worcestershire he sent down only four overs in the match. However, he still took 61 wickets for Nottinghamshire in all first-class games during the season and he also played his part with the bat, making 807 first-class runs. Starting their campaign well, Nottinghamshire won their first Championship game, beating Lancashire by an innings and 37 runs, and Hadlee was in fine all-round form, scoring 59 and taking nine wickets in the match; in the home side’s second innings “hostile bowling” ( Wisden ) by the New Zealander gave him figures of 6 for 65. At Trent Bridge Nottinghamshire swept aside Hampshire (70 and 56) by 272 runs as Hadlee (7-25) destroyed their first innings, and then at Chesterfield, “aggressive bowling” ( Wisden ) by Hadlee (5-64) troubled the Derbyshire batsmen. Bowlers dominated events in the fixture with Kent and Hadlee took five wickets in this game. Hadlee (131) scored an “exciting century” ( Wisden ) against Surrey at the Oval after Sylvester Clarke had caused plenty of problems for the earlier batsmen. Batting for 137 minutes, the New Zealander hit seven sixes and twelve fours and with N.J.B.Illingworth (46*) put on 115 for the eighth wicket. Nottinghamshire fared even less well in their second innings and despite more attractive batting from Hadlee (37), his side went down to a heavy defeat. There were more runs for the New Zealander in the games that followed. In the home fixture against Lancashire he made 60 (in a total of only 164) and in the match with Gloucestershire, at Cheltenham, he scored 64 as Nottinghamshire once again failed to reach two hundred. In the encounter with Worcestershire, he made 100 not out and with Derek Randall (122) shared a 40
