New Zealand thus gained a welcome victory by 62 runs. At Christchurch the weather was the winner but not before Hadlee claimed 5 for 47 and also forced Syed Kirmani, the Indian wicket-keeper, to retire when he was hit on the jaw trying to hook a bouncer. A spinner’s pitch at Auckland saw John Bracewell take 9 for 136 in the match while Hadlee had to settle for just one wicket in a game that ended disappointingly in a draw.
