Rescuing his side in the first innings and then putting his team in a strong position in the second, Hadlee made scores of 48 and 103; his century included three sixes and fourteen fours in just 99 minutes, and his stand with Jeremy Coney (96) put on 159 for the seventh wicket. He also gave the Queensland batsmen plenty to think about as he returned figures of 5 for 61 as the state were dismissed for 203 in the first innings. In a sudden burst, Hadlee took three wickets in six balls, dismissing Greg Ritchie, Trevor Hohns and Greg Chappell, all without scoring. Australia won both the First and Second Tests by wide margins, but Hadlee displayed fine form in these games, taking ten wickets and at Brisbane making a defiant 51 not out in the second innings as Dennis Lillee (6-53) sent the Kiwis packing. At Perth Hadlee returned match figures of 7 for 107 and dismissed Graeme Wood, Australia’s opening batsman, for a pair, but Lillee, once again, disposed of New Zealand (196) on the first day, taking 5 for 63 and 7 for 77 in the match. New Zealand performed much better in an exciting Third Test at Melbourne. Australia, with a first innings lead of just four, found Hadlee (6-57) a handful when they batted again and their fortunes declined from 111 for 2 to 188 all out. Hadlee finished their second innings by taking three wickets with his last four balls, thus giving him the best match (9-146) and series (19 wickets at 19.15 each) figures for New Zealand in Tests against Australia.
